Some observers seem to have assumed the FA?s punishment of Wayne Rooney was a success because the �weekend?s fixtures proceeded without a rash of red and yellow cards for swearing.
Of course, exactly the opposite is true. The lack of �punishment merely exposed the hollow nature of the action against Rooney.
There were plenty of examples of players swearing directly into the crowd, or at officials, and no action was taken at all. So much for the renewed vigour of the Respect campaign.
