Allardyce to be new West Ham manager

? Allardyce offered huge bonus to lift Hammers back to top flight
? Former Blackburn manager seeks assurances from co-owners

Sam Allardyce is expected to be confirmed as the new manager of West Ham United as soon as the final details of his contract have been signed off, according to a source close to the 56-year-old.

It is thought that Allardyce will be paid a 1.25m?a-year salary, plus a bonus of at least 1m by David Gold and David Sullivan, the co-owners, if he can return the relegated club straight back into the Premier League next season. Sullivan has said that Championship football will "blow a 40m hole" in the club's finances, despite the parachute money West Ham will receive over the next two seasons.

Allardyce will replace Avram Grant, who was sacked once West Ham's drop into the Championship was confirmed following the 3-2 defeat at Wigan Athletic this month. Allardyce has been out of work since he was removed as the Blackburn Rovers manager last December, after being in charge at Ewood Park for two years.

Allardyce's preference had been to return to work at a top-flight club, with the former Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle United manager not declaring an interest when Burnley and Preston North End were searching for a new manager.

However, West Ham's greater profile and the larger budget, despite their financial difficulties, is thought to have persuaded Allardyce that the east London club provide the ideal platform from which to relaunch a 20-year managerial career he still hopes could include taking charge of the England team.

Whether he will be allowed total control of transfer affairs by Gold and Sullivan is a moot point, while Allardyce will also have sought assurances from the owners that they will measure their public statements as much as possible. Grant is known to been unhappy at interference from Gold, Sullivan and Karren Brady, the vice-chairman, in both of these regards during his single-season tenure, though it is understood Allardyce is satisfied following discussions.

Once Allardyce is appointed the future of the relegated club's better players, who include Scott Parker, Robert Green, Matthew Upson, Carlton Cole and Thomas Hitzlsperger, should become clearer. While Parker, Green, Upson and Cole are almost certain to leave, Sullivan has told Hitzlsperger that he would be made club captain and the team's focal point should the German midfielder choose to stay on and help in the tilt at winning instant promotion.

Demba Ba, the Senegalese who scored seven league goals in 12 appearances since joining on a pay-as-you-play deal in January from Hoffenheim, is also undecided.

Allardyce was reported as saying at the weekend: "Everything has been agreed in principle and I look forward to taking charge after I have had a family holiday. It's always difficult dealing with the aftermath of relegation but I want to get West Ham back into the Premier League as quickly as possible."

Allardyce beat other possible candidates who are believed to have included Queens Park Rangers' Neil Warnock, Dave Jones, the sacked Cardiff City manager, and Ian Holloway of Blackpool.

Talking Horses: Daily horse racing blog

Today's best bets and the latest news in our daily horse racing blog

Vadamar heads for Derby after work-out

1.45pm: Vadamar was confirmed as an intended runner in the Derby after a work-out this morning. Vadamar was odds-on to beat Pour Moi in the Prix Greffulhe at Saint-Cloud earlier this month, but could only finish third behind his fellow Epsom aspirant.

Georges Rimaud, the racing manager to his owner, the Aga Khan, admits the colt needs to progress, but recent homework prompted connections to have a tilt at the mile-and-a-half Classic. "We have decided to let him run. He worked well this morning, I am told," Rimaud said. "The horse has to improve, but we hope he can.

"Pour Moi is a good horse as well, obviously, but we believe Vadamar has the right to run."

The Queen's Carlton House headed 17 remaining colts for Saturday's Derby following today's confirmation stage. The colt shot to the head of the betting for the Epsom Classic with a superb effort in the Dante Stakes at York.

Aidan O'Brien looks set to unleash his usual strong challenge, with Dante runner-up Seville and Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial winner Recital heading the Ballydoyle team. Memphis Tennessee, Treasure Beach and Roderic O'Connor also remain in the reckoning, although the latter is expected to contest Sunday's French Derby instead.

Ed Dunlop's 2,000 Guineas third Native Khan is another major player, while Godolphin's hopes appear to rest on Ocean War. Sheikh Mohammed's operation have also left in Casamento and Genius Beast, but other targets are preferred.

John Gosden is double handed at this stage with Masked Marvel and Nathaniel, while Andr Fabre's Pour Moi is set to be joined on the trip from France by the Alain de Royer-Dupr-trained Vadamar.

Castlemorris King, Marhaba Malyoon and Pisco Sour complete the possibles.

Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford reaffirmed Ocean War would be Godolphin's sole representative should things go to plan in the days leading up to the big race. He told At The Races: "We are very much leaning towards Ocean War as being our Derby contender with Casamento going for the Prix du Jockey Club and Genius Beast waiting for the King Edward [at Royal Ascot].

"All three have stayed in at the confirmation stage, that gives us a little more time as a precautionary measure in case we have to change our plans at the last minute, but as things stand that is what we'll do. Ocean War has done very well - he's unbeaten this season. What we like about him is his very tenacious attitude. We're pretty certain a mile and a half will suit him very well. We think a true-run race will help him and we expect to see him to do all his best work at the finish.

"On the book we know he's got plenty to find and he's got to improve a great deal on what's done so far, but he's done nothing but please us throughout the whole programme towards the Derby." Press Association

Today's best bets, by Tony Paley

Bank holiday Mondays are not what they used to be and the days of guaranteed classy racing and regular terrestrial coverage are long gone but at least today we have a competitive Class Two handicap in the shape of the Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar.

Mirrored (4.10), who looks sure to run a big race, is the runner who takes the eye in the 10-furlong event following a smooth victory in his comeback race at Doncaster last month. Breakheart has been the one for money this morning and Coral are offering a generous 8-1 about Mirrored.

The Tim Easterby recruit had already dropped 10lb in the ratings when joining the Malton trainer from Dandy Nicholls last year and fell further from his lofty heights in the ratings after a series of unplaced efforts in 2010.

Easterby revealed he had changed the horse's training regime over the winter and that clearly worked the oracle as Mirrored won with plenty in hand at Doncaster, weaving his way through the field from what looked an impossible position on the turn into the home straight.

The winner was raised 6lb for that win but on a handicap mark of 91 he is still 9lb lower than when running for Sir Michael Stoute as a three-year-old and finishing placed at Royal Ascot, Sandown's Eclipse meeting and Glorious Goodwood in much more exalted company than he faces today.

The selection always looked as if he would improve for a stiffer test of stamina than the mile trips he was regularly racing over then too and Easterby clearly has a very well handicapped horse on his hands.

Similar comments apply to Simple Jim (5.20), who has clearly been primed by the excellent David O'Meara to follow up his win last year in the race that concludes the racing at Redcar this afternoon.

The selection has run at distances short of his best so far this campaign but steps back up to his optimum trip today. Following his success in this event 12 months ago he went on to show improved form and won off a rating of 62 and returns here on 55, the same mark he won off in 2010.

Henry Candy, renowned for training sprinters, looks to have another useful speedster in Sluggsy Morant (2.40) who can follow up his Salisbury victory at Leicester. The son of Monsieur Bond won with something in hand that day and is expected to take this heat on his way to better things.

'No one has given us a hiding like Bara'

? 'They are the best team Manchester United have faced'
? Guardiola: 'That is the way we want to play'

Sir Alex Ferguson hailed Barcelona as the strongest team he has confronted as a manager after the Catalans claimed their fourth European Cup at Manchester United's expense, although this chastening experience has not dented the Scot's enthusiasm to attempt to overhaul "the best team in Europe".

The Premier League champions suffered a sobering defeat here, the scoreline deceptive, with their manager conceding his own team had been outclassed by a rampant Bara. "They do mesmerise you with the way they pass it," Ferguson said . "I expected us to do better, particularly after half-time, but it wasn't to be. Great teams do go in cycles and they're at the peak of the cycle they're in at the moment.

"They're the best in Europe, no question about that. In my time as a manager, I would say they're the best team we've faced. Everyone acknowledges that and I accept that. It's not easy when you've been well beaten like that to think another way. No one has given us a hiding like that. It's a great moment for them. They deserve it because they play the right way and enjoy their football.

"But how long it lasts ... whether they can replace that team at some point ... they certainly have the right philosophy, but it's always difficult to find players like Xavi [Hernndez], [Andrs] Iniesta and [Lionel] Messi all the time. But they're enjoying the moment that they have just now. We never controlled Lionel Messi, but many people have had to say that over the years."

Xavi and Messi, in particular, revelled here, with Pep Guardiola thrilled by the Argentinian's contribution, which included his first goal in England. "Lionel is the best player I have ever seen, probably the best player I will see," the Bara coach said. "He is unique, a one-off. But this was a better performance than the one we put in to beat United in Rome [2-0 in 2009]. In Italy, we played a 'good' game. Tonight, it was the way in which we won that made me most proud. That is the way we want to play football."

Ferguson, even at 69, insisted he retained the enthusiasm and energy to regain the European Cup and was relishing the task ahead. "The challenge is always to improve yourselves," he said. "Over the years, we've done OK when confronted by things like this, and taking [Barcelona] on is another challenge. We've some very good players and, of course, where we start to find a way forward is something we'll mull over the summer. We're not lacking in ideas . Hopefully we'll come up with the right ones.

"You shouldn't be afraid of a challenge. We want to improve. Of course, next season, we must improve even more. But we have a challenge with Barcelona. We all do. It's no consolation being the second-best team. I don't enjoy being second-best. Any club with the history we have ? Real Madrid, Milan ? they'd say the same."

The Scot offered his opposite number a warning that he should not be hasty in his desire to move on for his own fresh challenge ? "If he's really considering that, he'll never have this experience again, that's for sure" ? although the Barcelona manager was insistent that he intends to see out another season at the Camp Nou before considering his options. "That is my intention," he said. "My future, when I leave here, will be very tough because I will wonder where players like these Barcelona players are, and if I will have problems finding them. But I want to continue for one more year."
